Q4: Education activities

ISOC currently sponsors many educational efforts. These include regional conferences, focused workshops, and conferences shared with other organizations.

What educational requirements do you think are important for ISOC to address? How would you recommend addressing them?

    ISOC should make efforts to include its educational programmes as part of curriculum (wherever possible) at schools & colleges. I think focused groups is the most important educational activity for ISOC. Internet [education] is a broad area of work/study, therefore, focus-groups can address specific issues related to Internet. However, regional conferences can be used to link focus-groups with other focus-groups and to share knowledge at a larger platforms.

    ISOC has a good track record in some types of educational activities, such as the NTWs and the Latin-American version of the NTW, WALC. Creating a curriculum that becomes part of the studies in schools and colleges is a much larger challenge that should be approached on a subject-by-subject basis where ISOC is in a superior position to provide it. This work will be best done in collaboration with Chapters and the organizations and institutions whose collaboration the Chapters can attract.

    ISOC does have to start producing a series of educational materials, in continuation of previous tradition, which now may include not only texts but also videos and audio recordings. However, the risk that these become inaccessible to people with disabilities is significant; as Arnoud van Wijk, ISOC’s staff person in charge of the disabilities area, remarked to me last week, for many years the Internet was a boon to people with hearing disabilities, but now, with the growing popularity of MySpace and YouTube, he again feels every day more deaf.

    There is a particularly important opportunity, which we have been a bit slow to use, in the convergence of Chapters’, Organizational Members’, and staff efforts, to use the educational materials and activities that already exist in companies, Chapters, etc. to the benefit of the whole of ISOC. If elected i will not this state of affairs continue, to the best of my efforts.

    With the increasing commercialization of the Internet, many of the fundamental concepts and principals that made the Internet a success is often lost. In ISOC�s educational efforts, whether on its own or with other organizations, it would be good to have ISOC ensure that these principals and concepts are expressly taught. Having many of the pioneers of the Internet associated with ISOC who can be available for these educational efforts, gives ISOC a unique edge over other commercial educational efforts.

    Meanwhile, I have witnessed the developing country workshops that ISOC has conducted in the past and seen the impact it has had on the next generation leaders of the Internet in various countries. I would definitely hope to see many of these educational efforts continued. If any, I think it should focus on emerging countries and least developed countries and focus on operational and technical issues.
