2006 Board Elections

Candidate Forum

Welcome to the ISOC 2006 BoT Elections forum!
Posted on February 2nd, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

Welcome to the ISOC 2006 Board of Trustees Elections forum! This forum will be used by the ISOC Elections Committee to interact with candidates. We’ll be putting questions to the candidates – questions about why they want to be appointed to ISOC’s board, what they consider important for the future of ISOC, and how they view current Internet issues. Our questions, and candidates’ replies, will be visible to all ISOC members through this forum. If you’d like to suggest a question that the elections committee should ask, please send it to QandA2006@isoc.org.

Q1: ISOC Chapters
Posted on March 28th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

Chapter activity as reported in the monthly newsletter appears to come only from a few chapters. Do you think that ISOC chapters are outmoded? If not, what activities do you think chapters should be involved in and, with regard to those activities, what should the Chapter-Headquarters working relationship be like? How do you see ISOC relating to chapters of developing nations in the near future?

Q2: ISOC and the WSIS process
Posted on March 28th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

What do you feel was the significance of the WSIS process to date (as it relates to ISOC) and do you think ISOC should be more or less involved in the coming Internet Governance Forum? What is your sense of the method in which ISOC has participated in recent Internet governance events, and how successful do you think it has been. Do you think that we should change our positioning and if so, how?

Q3: ISOC Board
Posted on March 28th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

Do you think the current model of electing the BoT needs to be changed? Today individual members do not elect trustees, and org members elect half of the Board, while contributing only with 1/4 of the budget. Are all stakeholders equally represented on the BoT, or there’s a need of restructuring, based on contribution from different constituencies?

Q4: Open initiatives
Posted on March 28th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

What is your vision about potential participation of ISOC and official support to open initiatives – free/open source software, legislation for open access and open content?

Q5: ISOC’s initiatives
Posted on March 28th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

What are the fields of activities in your view, in which ISOC and ISOC chapters are participating poorly, or not participating/working at all. Please evaluate the weaknesses of ISOC’s work in the context of active participation in issues, you assume as important.

Q6: Combatting Spam
Posted on March 28th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

To what extent and how should ISOC be playing a role with respect to spam, and what are your opinions regarding the battle against spam?

Q7. Looking to the future
Posted on April 24th, 2006 by the ISOC Elections Committee

The term of the board members elected will be three years. Three years from now, what you would like ISOC and its various categories of members to have achieved? What do we need to do to accomplish that? What present encumbrances do we need to step away from? What new projects or missions do we need to undertake? What that is working do we need to continue and enhance? How might you suggest that we enhance it? What would be the role of the Organizational membership in achieving that, and what benefit would accrue to them? What would be the role of the Chapters in achieving that, and what benefit would accrue to them? What would be the role of individual members in achieving that, and what benefit would accrue to them? What benefit would accrue to the Internet as a whole, and how would that help in enabling access to those who now do not have it or are in one way or another limited?
