INET Colombo a success

INET Colombo was successfully held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from May 23-24 at the Hilton Colombo Hotel with the theme “Internet for All”.

The rich agenda featured local, regional and international speakers and covered topics such as access, security, policy, mobile Internet and IPv6. Agenda details available here.

The event was opened with traditional Sri Lankan dances and music, and in keeping with local traditions, lighting of oil lamps. The Chief Guest, who formally opened the event, was Mr Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka and Chairman of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO). As part of his opening speech Mr Weeratunga outlined the initiatives the Government of Sri Lanka has launched in its desire to become the regional knowledge hub. In his speech and interactions later with ISOC’s Regional Director, Rajnesh Singh, Mr Weeratunga committed to high-level support of the Sri Lankan Chapter and ISOC.

INET Colombo was webcast live on livestream.com and all sessions are archived on the ISOC Chapters channel.

The first combined Asia Pacific ISOC regional chapters workshop was held the weekend prior (May 21-22)
at the same venue.

Also held as part of INET Colombo, over the May 21-22 period were various workshops covering topics such as network forensics, IPv6, localisation and social media. This goes back to the roots of early global INETs which included technical workshops and seminars. The workshops were very successful, with a second IPv6 workshop being scheduled over the period in response to demand. The workshops were held at the University of Colombo School of Computing facilities.

The next Asian Regional INET is scheduled for Bangalore, India in November.
