Track 1: New Applications

Session : Distributed Multimedia

By Irčne Butor and Hassina Bounif, 23 July 1998

Myung-Ki Shin < mkshin@pec.etri.re.kr > from Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (Korea) talked about Web-Based Real-Time Multimedia Applications for the Mbone ( http://www.mbone.or.kr/rtmw/ ). The challenge is how to integrate multicast audio/video seamlessly into the Web. This requires being able to apply RTP to the Web, to address multimedia (URLs or SDP) and to deploy media extension. Integrating RTP into the Web has been achieved by creating an RTP applet and enabling Web users to join an Mbone session. No special software is required to update.

Lassaad Gannoun < gannoun@eurecom.fr > from the Institut Eurécom (France) talked about Shared Window System (SWS) for Large Groups Based on Multicast. They designed a shared window system (SWS) so that a high number of users can join and leave the multicast group. SWS have a scalable distribution, a scalable join protocol and control. Xprotocol has limitations, it is not designed for sharing X applications. SWS has a high level of abstraction.

When we asked Lassaad Gannoun to talk about his work, he said that its objective is to allow sharing an application over many workstations. It allows several users to simultaneously use an application. It takes place within the scope of cooperative work or distance learning.

One fundamental characteristic of these systems is that they use a network infrastructure, either for restricted diffusion or IP multicast .

Norbert Schiffner < Norbert.Schifner@igd.fhg.de > from the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (Germany) talked to us about Virtual Emergency Task Force ( http://www.igd.fhg.de/www/igd_a9 ).Vision provide new applications for the Internet using ATM network. The components of the Collaborative Virtual Environments are virtual worlds, 2D and 3D models. Agent support combines graphical representation and functional behavior of objects. VETAF/CVE runs on PC NT 4.0 or high-end graphics subsystems.

When asked about the future of his work, Norbert Schiffner replied "In one or two years, I expect the system will be the common system for two dimensional video conferencing like Netscape... You will have to solve three dimensional problems"
